Most Outstanding Cultural Program Nomination: Vietnamese Student Association of Minnesota (VSAM)

Our annual Tet Show was held on February 18, 2017. It is put on to promote the Vietnamese culture by showcasing the talent of our entire organization through our skit and performances. This year, we had about 90 volunteers and 800+ attendees. Our volunteers began practicing and planning in September for our show in February. (continued down below)

How did this cultural program serve the campus and/or community?

Our annual Tet Show served the campus and community by being an inclusive event for everyone regardless of age, race, gender, and/or beliefs. Our purpose to promote the Vietnamese culture is shown through this event by multiple performances in both Vietnamese and English while also providing insight on the Vietnamese-American experience.

How did the cultural program meet goals set by the organization?

Our organization wanted to promote the Vietnamese culture while keeping the importance of “Embracing our Identities.” This goal was met throughout our show by our skit which portrayed Vietnamese-Americans trying to find themselves and build their identities. The overall show also helped us achieve our goal by bringing our students together.

How did the organization overcome any challenges that arose while planning and implementing the cultural program?

VSAM overcame the biggest challenge that we have ever faced while planning such a big event, which was getting no funding directly from our school. Through fundraising, student group grants, and sponsorships, we as a team, came together and volunteered our time and effort to raise $12,000+ – the exact amount that we spent for this show.
