VSA Member of the Year Nomination: June Yang-Gungsing

Why was this person selected as “Member of the Year” for your organization? What was the criteria to be a recipient of this award?


June Yang-Gungsing was selected as “Member of the Year” for VSAM because of her sustainable determination, exemplary leadership, and courageous voice in our community. She was the Head Director of our organization’s biggest event, Tet Show that hosts over 800 people and includes over 150 volunteers and staff members.

Describe the roles the nominee has held in his/her community and how these roles have influenced your organization. Provide examples.

June Yang-Gungsing is a strong, resilient, and stereotype-breaking leader. She has progress our organization by providing sustainable mentoring as well as forming coalition between the Vietnamese community and other ethic backgrounds, such as, Hmong, Lao, and other Southeast Asian communities. She continues to inspire everyone everyday.

What qualities does the nominee have that makes him/her stand out within your organization? Provide examples.

June Yang-Gungsing is resilient. As a female and Asian-American identified individual who grew up oppressed by the majority of her community. Every day, she strives to break stereotypes, educating others when people tell her she isn’t making a difference, and overcoming her internal struggles. She is not silent and scared to voice her perspective.
