Most Outstanding Cultural Program Nomination: University of Mississippi Vietnamese Student Assocation

Our 7th annual culture show occurred in April 7th, 2017. We hold this event in efforts to share the Vietnamese culture with those in our community. Given that many of our members are also not Vietnamese, it allows them an opportunity to really learn more cultural aspects besides food. We also include various acts that are really just meant to show off whatever talent we may have in the organization in a given year. This year there were approximately 20-30 participates in the actual show itself. Funding was provided by the Associated Student Body. They purchased some of our props as well as paid for the venue. Additionally, we received food donations from Zaxby’s which we used towards feeding our performers during practice.

How did this cultural program serve the campus and/or community?

It provided a free opportunity for members of the Oxford-Lafayette community to see what UMVSA is all about.

How did the cultural program meet goals set by the organization?

Our main goal for the show was to have our members be active and proud of the product they produce. This year we did not set out for profit gain so it really took some pressure off and was merely a pride aspect of just putting on a quality show.

How did the organization overcome any challenges that arose while planning and implementing the cultural program?

We were hit with a number issues that honestly made us question whether or not our show was going to happen. We found out two days before our first scheduled date that our venue had forgotten about our reservation. We ultimately could not find an alternative for that date and scrambled to set a new date and find a new venue. Everything worked out for the best though. It allowed for more time to work on our performances and the venue we used was super accommodating and helpful.
