What are the purpose and goal(s) of the VSA, and how has the VSA met or exceeded those goals?

The Vietnamese Student Association at UTA serves to promote awareness and appreciation of the Vietnamese culture within the general student body and beyond.  Students will be able to interact and exchange ideas and experiences vital to the growth and success of VSA.  Thus, VSA strives to serve the community through philanthropic events and to bridge diversity through cultural and social events. UTA VSA had achieved our mission by holding various events throughout the year to raise money and to spread our culture.

Address how the VSA was outstanding in the following areas: recruitment, marketing, outreach to campus community, use of resources (financial, etc.), officer training and event planning.

Recruitment begins before the school year starts at freshman and transfer student orientation. Member retention was helped along by the numerous internal and external events held throughout the year. UTA VSA also had an exceptional student led creative team that had implemented a new logo, as well as composed videos for our events. UTA VSA Dance regularly coordinates with Asia Times Square in Grand Prairie to perform for events, as well as participated in UTA’s One Night in Asia and UTA’s International Week. Funds are generally raised by holding food sales on campus, and spent on our annual Date Auction. This year’s officer board implemented a new intern system in order for incoming officers to build bonds with each other.

 

How did the group work to establish responsibility and accountability among its members?

Man power for events is always a struggle for a growing group. Therefore, sign-up sheets were the usual method in finding interested volunteers. Generally, if you sign up for a position then you are expected to complete your role or find a replacement. (Things like rides to other universities, etc.) Another way we kept members accountable were volunteers that helped out during our Date Auction event were offered a discounted rate on tickets.

How did the VSA work together to maximize strengths and overcome weaknesses?

A ten member officer board can only so much can be accomplished. Therefore, the officers often looked towards it’s members for help. We worked together and looked at each other when we needed help. Everyone is able to help and VSA is here to nurture and grow future leaders in the community.

 

Provide specific examples of how the student group demonstrated growth and development in the 2016-2017 academic year.

This year UTA VSA was fortunate to host this year’s Asian Olympics and was a huge burden on the officers as well as the volunteers. The funds required to pull off this event was a couple thousand dollars, but through sponsorships we were able to pull it off. Every month we hold a food sale on campus which requires hours of preparation. Members and officers alike are up till 2 in the morning, but the bonds created when suffering together are priceless. Even though it might be easier to not plan events, we suffer for our members.
